These Lycoming Torque ‘Hold-Down’ plates (Wide Deck) are offered as a direct replacement for Lycoming PN# ST-222 / Wide Deck (Wide Deck). When installed, the Torque Plates prevent the Crankshaft Bearings from rotating out of position by maintaining the clamping force on the case when cylinders are removed. The plate not only maintains a clamping force, but it also protects both the connecting rod and the case from damage caused by the connecting rod contacting the case during engine service. Lycoming urges the use of ST-222 / Wide Deck Torque Plates during any type of overhaul process that requires the removal of a cylinder.
